Do you want to know more about us?

We are a regional resource for pelvic floor disorders. Oklahoma's women have expanded options for overcoming debilitating and sometimes embarrassing conditions.  Our expertise draws patients from across the country and overseas.

The state’s first fellowship-trained physicians in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery (Urogynecology), S. A. Shobeiri, MD, M. Nihira, MD, MPH, L. Quiroz, MD, have special expertise that attract complex cases from doctors across the state.  Emily Swafford, PT is the director of the Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation program.  Sophisticated equipment makes the combination of diagnostic capabilities at OU Physicians Women’s Pelvic & Bladder Center the most advanced in the nation.

Our doctors and physical therapists spend the required time assessing our patients – often as long as an hour with each one – to help them understand the complex causes of their conditions.  These assessments include a detailed patient history, a physical examination and advanced diagnostic testing.  In most cases, women are evaluated in a single visit and sent home with a treatment plan.  Our physicians have been published extensively in national and international journals.  They are frequent presenters at national and international medical meetings contributing to the advancements in the field of Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery/Urogynecology.

OU pelvic floor specialists have pioneered surgical procedures or innovations in patient care that are world firsts.  OU Physicians also serve as medical faculty at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine and train the region’s future physicians.

The OU Physicians Women’s Pelvic & Bladder Clinic provides advanced diagnostics, rehabilitation and corrective surgery for the following conditions:

  • Vaginal agenesis / MRKH
  • Vaginal stenosis or non-functional vagina (Narrowing of vaginal diameter and length requiring corrective surgery)
  • Mesh erosion, eroded slings, surgical complications
  • Incomplete bladder emptying,
  • Urinary frequency, urgency, nocturia
  • Frequent urinary tract infections
  • Fecal incontinence
  • Rectal fullness or prolapse
  • Vaginal prolapse (Cystocele, Rectocele, Enterocele)
  • Developmental variations requiring corrective surgery
  • Female sexual issues
  • Pelvic pain (endometriosis, interstitial cystitis, chronic pain syndromes)
  • Pudendal neuropathy

The clinic offers non-surgical treatments, including medications, pelvic exercises, biofeedback, electric stimulation, behavioral and dietary modifications and mechanical devices.  When symptoms continue to interfere with daily activities, vaginal, abdominal or laparoscopic surgery may be necessary.  Depending on your condition the most appropriate route for surgery will be chosen.  Corrective surgeries for pelvic and bladder conditions can be outpatient procedures with small incisions and minimal post-operative pain and recovery time.

Overview

The fellowship in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery is accredited by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and the American Board of Urology.

Goals

The goal of our fellowship is to produce academic practitioners in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery, and to encourage fellows to enter academic medicine by providing them with the breadth and depth of clinical and scientific knowledge.  The strengths of this program include:

  • Clinical exposure to the complete battery of diagnostic and therapeutic options for women with pelvic floor disorders
  • Multidisciplinary environment with faculty in urology, colon and rectal surgery, neurology, gastroenterology, radiology, and physical therapy
  • Opportunity for involvement in many funded pelvic floor research. Clinical

Our clinical practice offers a full spectrum of female pelvic medicine services.  Fellows interact with all three attending physicians at OU, both in the outpatient clinical setting and in the operating room. Additionally, there are operative experiences at Saint Anthony Hospital and Intgris Baptist Hospital with our 2 adjunct faculty members. Fellows perform the majority of urodynamic studies in conjunction with the Urogynecology nurse. We have a pelvic floor dysfunction program that is coordinated through the Urogynecology division but involves additional consultants in urology, colorectal surgery, gastroenterology, physical therapy, and radiology (for dynamic pelvic floor MRI). Finally, Ou pelvic floor laboratory offers full spectrum of translabial/transperineal pelvic floor ultrasound (3D) , endoanal ultrasonography (3D), anorectal manometry, EMG, Cinedefecography, retrograde pyelogram, percutaneous neuromodulation testing, and complete pelvic floor neurophysiologic testing.

During the second year of fellowship, fellows are given the opportunity to have their own clinic session under the supervision of a faculty member. In addition, a resident urogynecology clinic is held as part of the third and fourth year Ob/Gyn residency rotation. The urogynecology division staffs this clinic and the fellow(s) is included in this rotating responsibility as appropriate to their level of training.

Educational

Fellowship is expected to be a combination of guided and self-taught education. Fellows are expected to read appropriate texts pertaining to the field of female pelvic medicine and remain current with the published literature.

These include: journal club, grand rounds, research meetings and didactic seminars. Surgical cases for the following week are presented in conjunction with the rotating third year Ob/Gyn resident.

Each Wednesday and Friday morning a resident urogynecology clinic is held as part of the rotation. The urogynecology division staffs this clinic and the fellow(s) is included in this rotating responsibility as appropriate to their level of training. Involvement in resident education is expected as part of the fellowship experience.

Research

It is our expectation that a fellow in our program will have fully developed and reported on at least one major research project during their fellowship. The width and breadth of both clinical and basic science projects that are currently underway in our division gives our fellows the opportunity to become involved in many areas. Areas of special interest include the neuroanatomy of the pelvic floor, Imaging of pelvic floor injury, basic science investigation of bladder inflammation.
